CORPUS CHRISTI - Students Prescott and Garcia Elementary Schools are finally in one brand new building.
The Dr. Jose Antonio Garcia Elementary School opened its doors to about 700 students today. The school has the capacity for about 900 students, so it's designed to grow.
Previously Pre-K through 2nd grade were at Garcia Elementary School and 3rd through 5th graders were at Prescott Elementary School.
The two campuses combined with the move.
Although some final touches are still needed, students and staff are excited.
"We're in the school, the school is ready, our kids are in the classrooms, they're enjoying the classrooms," said Principal Norma Ann De Leon, "a lot of rich colors, beautiful colors and we're just excited to be here."
Third grader Star Salazar agreed, "my classroom is very big," she said. "How does it compare to your last classroom?" we asked. "I think this classroom is better than the other one," said Salazar.
Assistant Principal Jackie Torres says watching the childrens' reactions this morning was motivating. "Just really in awe of coming into the building, they were just beyond words, they were very excited and as cold as it was they were still very excited to be here," she said.
The school is named after Doctor Jose Antonio Garcia, a medical doctor.
The theme is explorers, and each hall is named after a different explorer.
