CORPUS CHRISTI - More services will soon be available to veterans in the Coastal Bend with the opening of a new specialty outpatient clinic.
It opened last week and already is filled with patients.
Veterans at the facility told us that the clinic is a big step forward for their needs. "I am grateful, so grateful for this," said Army Veteran Leslie Henderson.
He says he has neurological needs, among other things.
Today was Henderson's first doctor's appointment in the new Corpus Christi Specialty Outpatient Clinic for veterans.
He says he typically has five to six medical needs a month. Some services are only available in Harlingen or San Antonio. So, getting there is a struggle. "We only have one van that takes us to our appointments, and it's a 12-seat van," Henderson explained.
That van sometimes fills up. In fact, last time he had to go to Harlingen, the van was not an option.
"I had to pay my own way on the Greyhound bus to go down there to make my appointment," Henderson said.
Today, he'll be able to see his doctor and fill prescriptions under one roof. There's also physical therapy, mental health care and a lab open now at this clinic.
Just one week after opening, the facility's waiting room is already filled with patients.
"I'm pretty pleased with the facility," veteran Nathaniel Archie said, "I hope the service is as nice as how it looks."
Archie is at the facility for treatment of a hernia, something he suffered while serving in the Navy. "I haven't served as long as some other guys, but just my little time in and all the commitment that the other guys have given I think its a little more appropriate," he said.
There is more to come. Dental care is something veterans here have not had. A dental wing should be opening at the facility in the coming months.
It's a service veterans like Henderson have been going without. "I definitely need that," he said, "and I'm looking forward to it."
The facility will also offer new care for dermatology, pulmonary care, and cardiology once it's fully functional.
