CORPUS CHRISTI - A new app recently created serves as a connector between child care providers and parents. The app allows moms and dads to monitor their child's mood, potty breaks and the amount of sleep they get, while they're away at work.
Co-founder of the app, John Leggett says, it can be tough for parents to part with their children every morning. But the new "Tykester" app that's available on smart devices can help parents with hesitation.
It's especially helpful for day care providers like Giselda Coronado, who has been doing in-home child care for 22 years.
"We all go to work and we all worry what they're doing, we all worry about what's going on. This is a special special app that they can just click on, it's fast, it's convenient and it's cheap," Coronado said.
It's actually free to download. Leggett says, it's an app made by parents for parents. They can scroll through a child's entire daily activity.
"Let's say the child slept for 45 minutes, you just use the slider bar to show how long and then save that," Leggett said.
Plus, the app allows the sitter to update more than one child's activities at once. That way they can spend time with the children and not be stuck on the phone.
"It's convenient, you just punch on it, if I have a message they have a little icon there, that tells them what I've put on there, so they go straight to it," Coronado said.
Icons or "push" notifications can be set up so that parents can track their child's status. It almost acts like a Facebook but Leggett says it's private and more personal.
"Now, this is private, it goes straight to them, all I do is punch a button for food, sleep time, nap time, I mean everything is on there," Coronado demonstrated.
Leggett says, the idea stemmed from a grant innovation project. After two years in the works, it blossomed into a unique way for parents to be part of the little ones day, everyday.
The app is aimed at in-home child care providers. However, the founders are working with three national daycare associations in order to get the word out about the app. That way parents and guardians can stay in touch with whoever is looking after their children.
