CORPUS CHRISTI - Neighborhoods First! stood against City Hall on Destination Bayfront but the man behind the grassroots group told KRIS-6 on Friday they are ready to work with the city council to help the city meet its goals.
"Our hand is out," said political activist John Kelley, one of the group's principal members. "We're ready to step up and unite with them to work toward bettering the city. If they aren't, they'll have to see how the voters react to that a year from now."
At Tuesday's City Council meeting, Kelley plans to ask leaders to rethink street and utility improvement plans now gathering dust at City Hall.
"We're gonna ask City Council to respect the will of the voters and to focus on infrastructure," he said. "Including a comprehensive master plan."
As for Destination Bayfront's demise, Kelley said criticism of his group - and the record-breaking turnout against the project - is short-sighted.
"Voters are a lot smarter than people give them credit for," he said. "If you get them the information, they'll make the right decision."
