Mugger Takes Elderly Woman's Purse

CORPUS CHRISTI -- A mugger grabs an elderly woman's purse after she picked up a prescription at the HEB on Port and Tarlton.
Then, the criminal took off in a car leaving the woman crying as she runs after him.
At 84-years-old Hortenzia Martinez is an active woman.
She likes to garden, cook and even walks to the nearby HEB four to five times a week to shop, but Friday afternoon, a crook ruined her trip.
She said, "Someone grabbed my purse and pulled on it as I was walking behind HEB. I just saw the back of a guy's head and said 'hey my purse, my purse.'"
Martinez says the man took off in a light grey four-door car, not giving up she ran after the car with tears in her eyes.
She said, "I felt very nervous and upset. This never happened to me. I've been here since 1955 and never, ever had anything like that happen."
Martinez eventually walked to a family member's house and called for help.
Police say there's surveillance video of the criminal and they'll be looking into the case this week.
Meanwhile, the independent grandmother says her encounter with a mugger won't prevent her from shopping and doing all the other things she loves.
Martinez said, "I now know what to look out for. But, it's not going to stop me. I'll just be more careful.
By the way, whoever took Martinez's purse, only got away with some stamps, medicine and 75 cents.
Martinez also wanted to tell women make sure you're aware of your surroundings and it's probably best to shop with a friend instead of alone.
