Mounted Patrol

AUSTIN - The next time you take a trip to Austin, it will be easy to spot the state's newest troopers.

The Texas Department of Safety introduced agent, trooper and ranger Tuesday at the State Capitol.

They make up the agency's first mounted patrol unit in the modern era.

DPS spokesman Tom Vinger says the horses will help them have a greater presence around the capitol.

Tom Vinger, said, "the Capitol is an unique environment, we have motorcycle units, we need mobility to get around in close spaces in the downtown area and these horses will help provide that."

Officials say the horses will patrol mostly at the Capitol but can be used anywhere across the state if they are needed.
