ABILENE - A shooting at an Abilene, Texas apartment complex has left a mother dead and her two-week-old child with a gunshot wound to the hand.
At approximately 11:30pm, Abilene Police Dispatch received a 911 call from a concerned family member regarding a domestic disturbance in progress at the Windsor Place Apartment Complex. Officers were dispatched to the scene. As the responding officers attempted to make contact with the residents they heard two gunshots come from inside the apartment. The officers immediately forced entry into the residence and located Makayla Bunting, aged 22, deceased in the residence with a gunshot wound to the head. The suspect, Chevayae Johnson, age 23, also appeared to be deceased from a gunshot wound to the head.
The responding officers located two children in the residence, aged 4 years old and 2 weeks old. The 4 year old was physically uninjured but the 2 week old suffered a serious injury to his hand from an apparent gunshot wound.
Ms. Bunting was holding her 2 week old infant when she was shot and the child was removed from her arms by responding officers. The four year old was also in close proximity to her mother at the time she was shot. The baby and the four year old child were taken from the apartment by the officers and medical assistance was summoned.
As the officers were exiting the apartment with the children, Mr. Johnson regained consciousness and came outside after the officers. The officers, while protecting the children, engaged in an active physical confrontation with the suspect. Mr. Johnson was taken into custody after a Taser was deployed.
Medical personnel arrived and the infant was taken to Hendrick Medical Center, and will be flown to Cook Children's Medical Center in Ft. Worth late Thursday morning. The 4 year old was released to family members after coordination with Child Protective Services. Mr. Johnson was also transported to the hospital with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Mr. Johnson is currently in critical condition at HMC.
Charges of homicide and injury to a child will be filed at the appropriate time pending the medical recovery of Mr. Johnson. Mr. Johnson is currently being monitored by police personnel at HMC.
