LIVE OAK COUNTY - A tragic accident in Live Oak County killed a mother and three of her young children, leaving her husband the only survivor. It happened around 7:00 this morning on US 59 about 10 miles North of George West.
Department of Public Safety troopers say they think fatigue caused the driver, 22-year-old Joannie Lopez, to veer her SUV off the road and hit an oak tree head on. Flames engulfed the SUV and troopers say only the husband made it out alive.
A picture from Joannie Lopez's Facebook page shows her with her three kids, three-year-old Andrew Jr., two-year-old Joel and one-year-old Christopher Elario. Troopers say Andrew Joaquin Lopez, Joannie's husband, went to Spohn Memorial in Corpus Christi with internal injuries and broken bones.
One of the DPS official who saw the aftermath of the accident said it was terrifying as the bodies were burned beyond recognition.
DPS Trooper Charlie Ramirez said, "Anytime that you have anybody that gets killed, it's hard and you just prepare yourself for the worst and in this particular case, seeing three little bodies being pulled out of the vehicle, along with their mom, was kind of sad."
