Mother Accused of Abusing Infant Makes Court Appearance

SINTON - No decision was made today in the case of a 5-month-old baby believed to be the victim of abuse.

Sofia Benavides and her boyfriend Edward Longoria were arrested two weeks ago for injury to a child.

The suspected abuse was discovered when the couple took the baby to the hospital.

Doctors say her face was completely bruised, all of her toes were broken, and cocaine was found in her system.

Prosecutors accuse Longoria of giving the baby cocaine to stop her from crying. They heard this from witnesses inside the household.

The couple claims the baby fell of the couch and hit her head.

The State has custody of the baby.

Benavides has a another hearing set for July 1st where a judge will decide if there is any chance of her getting her child back.

Benavides also has three other children she may never get back. Currently, they are in the care of a relative.
