SAN ANTONIO (AP) - At least 28 people suspected of being gang members have been nabbed in Texas as part of a nationwide sweep leading to more than 600 arrests.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials on Thursday announced details of the latest crackdown on street gangs called "Projected Southbound."

ICE agents, along with local authorities in dozens of cities, arrested 638 suspected gang members over a month long period. Investigators say the Texas arrests happened in the Harlingen, Laredo, San Antonio and Dallas areas.

ICE officials say overall 78 suspected gang members were arrested on federal charges while another 447 currently face only state charges. ICE arrested 113 others on administrative immigration charges. More than 400 of those arrested have violent criminal histories.

Project Southbound ran March 12 to April 13.
