CORPUS CHRISTI - Former Hook turned Astros starting pitcher Bud Norris is beginning 2013 as the Astros highest paid player. His first attempt at arbitration worked out pretty well, as the 27-year old landed a one-year three million dollar deal.
Norris has 97 starts to his name with the Club, a low number in most organizations, but with the Astros he's one of the veterans. And as one of the older players, Norris is beginning a new role, as the team's leader.
"It's different because I am put in a spot I don't know, but I know these kids as well as they know me and they should be able to come up to me and talk about stuff and I will talk to them," said Norris.
Last season he was 7-13 with a 4.65 earned-run average in 29 starts while battling injury. As an Astro he is 28-37 with a 4.42 ERA, and he's registered 553 strikeouts through 532 innings of work.
"I have seen a little in my 3.5 years, in 2009 we had (Lance) Berkman and (Roy) Oswalt but they aren't here so I am trying to step in and show the Astros way and the tradition," he said.
Norris spent just one season with the Hooks back in 2008.
As for this year's team, he didn't comment on how successful they'd be in the win column, rather focused on how the goal is getting better one day at a time.
"We just need to simplify the games and have trust and confidence and know that every day is a good day. I don't know if it will come on paper in forms of wins and losses but we have a lot of strides to make and we are gonna make them this year," said Norris.
