CORPUS CHRISTI - Students at Moody High School got a cool lesson today in ocean exploration.
Friday morning, students saw live pictures of Jason James exploring the Caribbean. James is a science teacher at the school.
"He taught very interesting subjects, he always had new...and interesting ways of teaching," said Miles McFarland, senior at Moody High School.
James is one of two Corpus Christi teachers selected by Citgo to explore the ocean aboard the Nautilus vessel.
"Citgo has come together with the community to take two ambassadors out to the exploration vessel, the Nautilus...on the Nautilus, they will be doing sea-mapping, communications technology, STEM preparation and research," said Rosie Collin, Community Relations Coordinator with Citgo.
Teachers said when James returns to teach in a few weeks, he'll have firsthand knowledge of coral reefs. Suraida Nanez-James said that's knowledge that will benefit students.
"If you're trying to teach your students about a subject...if you yourself have gone through that experience...it makes you a better teacher."
As of Friday, James was en route from Belize to Jamaica. He should be back in Corpus Christi in a few days. McFarland said he can't wait to hear more about what his teacher learned.
"Hopefully what he brings back from the Nautilus, is experiences that he had."
