CORPUS CHRISTI - One of the most anticipated girls basketball games in town lived up to its billing on Tuesday night as Moody edged Ray 45-43 thanks to a buzzer beating bucket from Adrienne Nickelson. It was Moody's first win over Ray in over six years.
(15-11)Moody improved to 6-0 in district play, while the defending 31-4A Co-Champion (19-7) Ray Lady Texans fell to 5-1.
Nickelson's basket actually came with 1.6 seconds to play in the game.
The Lady Trojans were down by as many as 13 points in the first half, but found their stride in the second half putting together a 33-19 run.
With under 30-seconds to play the Lady Texans trailed by three, before Jasmine Gomez buried a three from the left wing.
Head Coach Roy DeLaPena told me his whole team thought they were headed to overtime following the basket, but Moody raced down the court and found Nickelson who scored in traffic to win the game.
The two still have one more scheduled contest on January 29th at Ray High School.
We will have the exclusive game winning basket tonight at 6pm in sports.
