ALICE - A detective with the Jim Wells County Sheriff's Department busted a man on charges of money laundering and weapons smuggling last night along Highway 281.
The department says detective Waldrop pulled over 23-year-old Elijio Perez around 8:30 p.m. A search of an auxiliary gas tank in the truck bed turned up a hidden compartment containing a small amount of synthetic marijuana, $40,520 in cash, an AK-47 style rifle and a pistol.
According to the department, one of the guns was reported stolen in Texarkana.
Perez is facing charges for being a felon in possession of a firearm, theft of a firearm, firearm smuggling, money laundering, and drug possession.
