CORPUS CHRISTI - The murder trial of Lawrence Mireles continues this morning at the Nueces County courthouse. He's accused of shooting 16-year-old Jenna Hernandez in the head and leaving her body on Stedman Island near Aransas Pass.
First to the stand today was Medical Examiner Dr. Ray Fernandez. He told the court samples for a rape kit were not taken during an autopsy because her body was too decomposed. Dr. Fernandez also said bruising found on the body may have occurred after Jenna's death.
A fisherman found the girl's body two days after her mother reported her missing. According to the mother, Jenna was texting Mireles late one night and said she would be home soon. She never returned.
Investigators say they tried to talk with Mireles twice before Jenna's body was found, but he ran away both times.
