CORPUS CHRISTI - A mother of 6, Liz Derry has witnessed many home births in her lifetime from her two of her brothers to three of her own children. After being a nurse for several years she decided to follow her true calling and become a midwife. Derry was the midwife for Baby Schaffer, the first Corpus Christi baby born in the new year.
"More and more women and families are for that matter are wanting to do things that are a little more personal. They just feel like they are missing out on something in a hospital," said Derry.

With the help of Derry, the Schaffer family brought their new baby girl into the world in a more natural way. It involves a water birth, and in this case, relaxing oils in place of drugs.

"So few women realize there are good options and child birth doesn't have to be painful and horrible and something scary it can actually be very wonderful," said Derry.

In Derry's two years of being a licensed midwife she has assisted in 127 births and delivered 69 babies on her own. Before Derry takes on a new clients she sits down with both the parents and discusses their health history.

"Each birth is so special and so unique and never gets old and is amazing to me I always leave the birth thinking wow this was so wonderful i can't believe I get to be apart of this," said Derry.

Midwife assisted births aren't totally technology free. If there's a complication, they do have some medical equipment they can use, but part of their training is to know when it's time for the baby or mother to go to the hospital, but she says confident and informed mother have few complications .
Most importantly Derry says home births allow both mother and father to play a more active role in the birth creating a deeper family bond.
