Metal Detectors To Remain At Texas School

SPRING, Texas (AP) - Metal detectors will remain in use for the rest of the school year at a suburban Houston school where a student was fatally stabbed last week.

A statement from the Spring school district Wednesday also says clear backpacks have been handed out to students as part of stepped up security at Spring High School.

The statement says attendance at the school was 89.6 percent of the registered enrollment, compared to a daily average of 92.5 percent. However, 72 students have been withdrawn officially while 17 have been enrolled since the Sept. 4 attack.

A 17-year-old student is jailed on a murder charge in the slaying of another 17-year-old student. The Harris County Sheriff's Office blamed the fight, which left three other students wounded, on gang violence.
