DALLAS - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's tennis team swept Oral Roberts 7-0 today to open Southland Conference play in Dallas at the Seay Tennis Center. The Islanders clinched the doubles point and went on to win all six singles matches to secure their seventh straight victory of the season.
"I thought the guys did a good job of setting the tone early with their footwork and intensity," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "I thought that the overall energy was good. There's a lot of things that we need to improve, so we will get back to work very hard tomorrow. This team has very high goals and a lot of hard work ahead of us to reach them."
The Islanders (8-3, 1-0 SLC) started strong clinching the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. The duo of Peter Nagy and Guillaume Rauseo topped ORU's (1-6, 0-2 SLC) Fabian Zierleyn and Jason Mechali 8-4 in No. 1 doubles. Pietro Jordao and Javier Pujol then teamed up to top Braxton Bates and Michael Sosnowski in the No. 3 spot, 8-4, and put the Islanders on the board 1-0. The senior-freshman pair of Matt Westmoreland and Paul Cook were leading Amar Saletovic and Parker Allen 6-5 when the doubles point was clinched.
A&M - Corpus Christi kept things rolling into singles play with six straight-set victories. Nagy set the tone early with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Zierleyn to win his seventh straight singles win in the No. 1 spot. The junior is now 8-1 on the year. Cook followed Nagy's lead, downing Sosnowski 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 spot to give the Islanders their third point of the day. Ricardo Mayagoitia improved to 4-2 in No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Saletovic to clinch the match. Rauseo, like Nagy, also secured his seventh consecutive victory in singles play. The sophomore captured a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Mechali in the No. 3 position. Rauseo is now 7-1 in No. 3 singles.
The Islanders kept the momentum going with victories on courts four and five. Pujol sealed a 6-1 first set before topping Allen in the second set 6-0 in the No. 4 position. Westmoreland followed with the Islanders' seventh point of the day in No. 5 singles. The senior took care of business with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Cole Guy to seal the match.
The Islanders will return to non-conference action along with the women's team at Louisiana-Lafayette on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
