HOUSTON, Texas - For the third time in as many meets the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's distance medley relay team ran to a first-place finish. This time the did so in the first day of action at the Howie Ryan Invitational in Houston.
It also marked the third different lineup the Islanders fielded. It was the combination of Paul Hansel, Jackson Davis, Daniel Rhodes and Brandon Lacy that finished in 10:14.63, which was the fastest this season for the Islanders, to record the victory. That mark is currently the best in the Southland Conference and is the third fastest in school history.
"The men's DMR ran a terrific race," head coach Shawn Flanagan said. "Hansel did a tremendous job of getting us a big lead, and the rest of the team ran well to lead us to the victory."
The women's DMR team, made up of Cecilia Jones, Ingrid Cleveland, Sidney Siepert and Ann-Kathrin Ott, also had a solid day of competition, as they came in fourth in the event with a time of 12:28.64, which is the third fastest mark in the conference.
Also taking place on Friday were several sprints with the best finishes of the day coming from Sampson Valadez in the 200m and Andres Salazar in the 400m. Both competitors finished in the top 15 in their respective categories with Valadez rounding out the top 10 with a mark of 23.23, while Salazar ran a time of 51.76 to come in 13th overall, but eighth out of the collegiate runners.
The highest finisher in the field competitions for the Islanders was Dustin Smith, as he finished 11th in the long jump with a 6.28 (20' 7¼").
"As a whole we have work to do, but we are moving in the right direction," Flanagan said. "Everyone is getting better, and we're looking forward to a great day of competition tomorrow."
The action will get started on Saturday with the shot put starting at 9 a.m., while the first running events will be the semifinals for the 60m hurdles and dash beginning at noon. The final races of the day are the two 4x400m relays, which are slotted for 4:50 and 5:15 p.m.
