CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball team has been selected to play in the 2014 College Insider Tournament, it was announced Sunday night. The Islanders (17-15) will travel to Greeley, Colo., to face Big Sky foe Northern Colorado (18-13) on Wednesday, March 19. Tipoff time is yet to be determined.
"We're thrilled to accept a spot in the CIT," head coach Willis Wilson said. "To go from six wins and postseason ineligibility last year to playing in a postseason tournament is an outstanding accomplishment by our players. They have earned the right to keep playing in the 2013-14 season.
"I've known Joe Dwyer and Angela Lento with CollegeInsider.com for a long time, and they run a first-class tournament that celebrates the accomplishments of mid-major programs," he added. "It's exciting to have Texas A&M-Corpus Christi be a part of this experience."
This marks the second appearance in a postseason tournament in program history, joining the 2007 Islanders squad that won the Southland regular season and conference titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Founded in 2009, the College Insider Tournament is run by CollegeInsider.com, providing 32 teams from non-BCS conferences with an additional avenue to earn spots in the postseason. All 31 games will be played on campus sites. In an effort to minimize travel and limit class time missed, the CIT does not determine future round opponents until after the results of the previous round, ensuring geographic stability.
The Bears posted an 18-13 overall mark, including a 7-4 mark against non-conference foes. UNC started its season with a bang, upsetting Kansas State with a 60-58 victory in Manhattan, Kan. The Bears were particularly tough at home, posting a 13-2 mark at the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion. Northern Colorado got out to a 13-4 start on the season, but finished the year falling in nine of its final 14 contests.
The Islanders wrapped up their most successful conference season since the 2007 campaign with a 14-4 record in Southland Conference play, finishing second in the league. A&M-Corpus Christi earned a bye to the semifinals, where it was defeated by No. 3 seed Sam Houston State (13-5). The Islanders have registered 11 more wins than they did a season ago, one of the best increases in the nation.
