CORPUS CHRISTI -- Tuloso Midway High School donated 18 acres of land including four baseball fields to Nueces County on Wednesday. The county plans to create a sports megaplex for youth teams across town.

The baseball team at the high school is hitting one out of the park for the county. Interim Superintendent, Doctor Suzanne Nelson said, the idea to donate this land to the county has been in discussion for a year. However, it wasn't until funds were available to build a new facility for the student athletes. The high school is getting funding for new baseball fields from the last bond that was passed.

Nueces County Commissioners accepted the 18 acres and Commissioner Mike Pusley said, the land will be a great addition to 82 acres the county already has and plenty of room for a mega sports complex.

"We decided to go ahead and donate it to the county," Doctor Nelson said.

The fields are in pretty good shape, in fact the commissioner said, they only need basic maintenance. Plus, the facility comes with a restroom, snack bar and lighting for night games. The county plans to make it the new home field for youth sports programs, including football, soccer and baseball.

Officials said, the high school students will have a new baseball facility built on the campus for the fighting warriors.

"We're hoping to have the new complex built not this baseball season but next baseball season," Doctor Nelson said.

By spring of 2014 the warriors will have a complex on school grounds, making it safer and convenient for the high school athletes, while creating a new home for kids to play ball.

Doctor Nelson said, the county will officially take over the land by January 1st, 2013.
