SAN PATRICIO COUNTY - The TP-McCampbell Airport will host a 'Fly-in' presented by SkyView Aviation and Skydive South Texas on Saturday, June 29th.
Four types of WWII-era airplanes from the Commemorative Air Force will take part in the event. Two of these planes are 1941 N2S-2 Stearmans, the same type of aircraft used by NAS-Corpus Christi to train naval aviators during WWII.
There's also a Cessna T-50 nicknamed the 'Bamboo Bomber' that was used during WWII by Army Air Force aviators. These two planes are flown and maintained by the Third Coast Squadron based at TP-McCampbell Airport.
A third plane, a B-25 Bomber nicknamed the "Devil Dog" was used extensively in the Pacific side of WWII. It is the same type plane that participated in Doolittle's Tokyo Raid. The United States first counterattack on Japan after the Pearl Harbor attack. This plane is flying here from Georgetown, Texas to participate.
The fourth plane, a C-47 now affectionately known as Bluebonnet Belle, is a WWII veteran who flew 75 combat support missions during the war. Although her logs reflect her primary mission w...as a transport aircraft, wartime records show she evacuated 459 combat casualties, carried 402 passengers, and repatriating 61 POWs back to England during the war. She also flew the day the Germans surrendered marking an end to European War during WWII. This plane is flown and maintained by the Highland Lakes Squadron from Burnet, Texas.
Along with these planes being on display; there will be plane rides for sale, tandem sky diving and parachute jumps offered.
Other participants will be members and aircraft from the Coast Guard Auxiliary and Department of Public Safety, the Experimental Aircraft Association as well as a radio control airplane group.
