CORPUS CHRISTI - Since early voting started, candidates have been allowed to park their vehicles with campaign signs at the Nueces County courthouse. However, one mayoral candidate's parking spot choice had people at the courthouse upset today.
Ray Madrigal parked his truck, featuring campaign signs and a licensed handicap placard, in a handicap spot near the entrance to the building. People visiting the courthouse today, didn't think this was fair for him to leave the truck in the spot overnight.
Lindal Edwards had jury duty this morning and she said, "It doesn't seem right that he is parked here all day when there are people that need this access daily. I mean I see a lot of handicap people parking all the way down there in none handicap spot."
Robert Lopez suffered from a stroke, and has since needed disabled parking. He says, "I don't like it. It made me park a little farther."
Edwards says, "Even though he has handicap access that doesn't give him a right to park here all day long. That's not what it's designed for. It bugs me."
Lopez added, "It doesn't look good but maybe he can come out here and explain it to you why he parked there."
So I went to get Madrigal's explanation. He told me he parked his truck in the handicap spot Monday, and checked with court officials to make sure it was legal, which it is.
Madrigal says, "It has a little advantage because a lot of people go back and forth to the court house and they have to pass by where the truck is parked."
He says he has the handicap sticker because he is a disabled war veteran, "I have a right to park there like everybody else but if it's causing a problem it's no problem for me to move it. You got to keep the voters happy."
Madrigal did move the truck. He tells us when he went back to the courthouse he was greeted by officers who were also trying to find a way to have the truck moved.
