Mayor Admits Defeat in Destination Bayfront Race

CORPUS CHRISTI - Within an hour of early voting returns, Corpus Christi Mayor Nelda Martinez announced the death of the Destination Bayfront project. With 52% of the vote in, the results look the same as early voting with 66% opposed to the project.

Speaking on behalf of the Destination Bayfront organizers, Martinez said that supporters, which included several council members, former Mayor Joe Adame and some of the city's most powerful real estate and business leaders, will have to take a step back and "regroup."

Early Voters said "NO" in overwhelming numbers to the $45 million project, according to final, unofficial returns.

Returns from districts on North Padre Island show 80 percent opposed.

@KRIS6NEWS is blanketing coverage of this - and other- election issues both from the station and with reporters at Brewster Street Icehouse, where Desination Bayfront organizers are watching poll returns.

We've also placed a reporter with the Neighborhoods First group, who have opposed the project.

We'll have live coverage starting at 10.
