CORPUS CHRISTI - Marine Lt. Col. Wesley Craig Reed, a Democrat, today filed the paperwork in Austin to challenge for U.S. Rep. Blake Farenthold's seat in the U.S. House.
Nueces County Democratic Party Chairman Joseph Ramirez says Reed, a Marine Corps reservist, traveled to Austin on Monday to turn in his candidacy paperwork.
It's a requirement for all federal office candidates.
Reed is a newcomer to politics but has deep roots in Nueces County. Ramirez said Reed's wife is a Flour Bluff High School graduate.
The couple live there, Ramirez said.
Reed is, as of 5 p.m. today, the only challenger from either major party to enter the race for Farenthold's seat.
The primary filing deadline is today at 6 p.m., CST.
Other notable candidates:
Democrat Mary Helen Berlanga is challening for Loyd Neal's seat as Nueces County Judge.
Republican Brent Chesney is one of two challengers vying for Nueces County Precinct Four Commissioner Joe McCombs' seat.
