CORPUS CHRISTI - The man convicted of beating his girlfriend up so badly, she needed re constructive surgery, learned his fate today.
You may recall Nicolas Garcia justified his actions because of a contract he had her sign, stating he could disipline the woman if she didn't do what he said.
Stephanie Carballeira, the victim in this case, told us during the trial, "I have had a broken jaw, fractured sternum. And then the whole side of my face is completely reconstructed. I have titanium screws in my face holding my face together."
Last month Garcia was found guilty in under 10 minutes by the jury of family violence. And today in court it was time to hear his fate.
The prosecutor told the court that Carballeira feared for her life, and "Any woman he dates is in danger."
But Garcia felt like his actions were all okay because he had Carballeira sign a contract, and that gave him the right to beat her if she did something he didn't like.
Garcia told the court, "The main reason that I am here in front fo you judge, is for justice. But the justice belongs to me. She cheated on me."
The defense tried to get Garcia probation, after a doctor found that he suffers from a mental illnes.
The defense attorney said, "He does not think he is delusional. But I think this whole trial, everything you have heard so far, shows that he has a serious mental illness."
Judge Guy Williams agreed, "It's obvious to everyone in this courtroom that you have some type of mental condition. Because if you think it's okay to beat up women, you got a problem."
But Williams would not agree that probation was enough for the crime Garcia committed, "It's because of your reluctance or your complete refusal I should say to accept treatment, you don't give me any alternative but to incarcerate you."
Garcia was facing two counts of family violence. He was sentenced to 25 years for the first count and 20 years for the second. But the sentences will run at the same time.
