CORPUS CHRISTI - Corpus Christi police tracked down a 23 year old suspect and tased him, after he went on a crime spree Friday with a pair of pruning shears. Our Mitch Bryan spoke with one of the victims about her terrifying experience at the sharp end of a pair of shears.

Police nabbed 23 year old Ruben Cardenas late Friday night after he apparently made several attempts to steal a car outside Blackbeard's restaurant.

"I usually have my car keys in my hand because I have mace on it. Last night I was so distraught, worrying about her being pregnant and what was going on, I didn't think nothing about my car keys," said waitress Candi Buchanen.

Candi Buchanen is a waitress at Blackbeard's and was rushing to take her pregnant daughter to the hospital when suddenly Cardenas rushed up to her.

"Two steps and he's up on me and he's got them shears stuck in my side," she said.

Candi says Cardenas stuck the shears into her side and demanded her car keys. In shock, Candi's instincts took over.

She told me, "And it just popped out of my mouth without me even thinking, this isn't my car. I don't have a car."

Candi says that lie just might have saved her life.

"It had to be the Lord that came over me. Because for me just to freeze, and that pop put of my mouth without even thinking, it had to be the Lord stepping in," Buchanen said.

Candi said the man suddenly took off, running inside the restaurant where he threatened several other waitresses with the shears, still demanding that they hand over their car keys.

Finally police caught the man and took him to jail, but Candi tells me she learned a valuable lesson about safety in a dark parking lot.

"But after last night, no. It's like every time a guy is going to walk me out from now on. Even if I do have mace. That really shook me up and opened my eyes," she said.

No amount of kind words would keep police from taking Cardenas to jail, and Candi tells me her daughter is doing just fine, and expects the baby to be born November 29th.

Cardenas was charged with attempted aggravated robbery, evading police on foot and criminal mischief.
