CORPUS CHRISTI - It's the wakeup call Madeline Bowen never expected.
"All I hear is my mom on the phone screaming, 'your dad just got assaulted at the beach.' and then she hangs up," Bowen said.
She received a call from her mother saying her dad, Doug Bowen, had been assaulted at the beach. "She tells me, 'your dad just got clawed in the head with a hammer...twice.'," Madeline Bowen recalled.
Madeline's mom, Debbie Bowen, said she and her husband were out fishing last night at J.P. Luby. Doug accidentally cast his line over someone else's and when her husband tried untangling the lines, she said the other fishermen got angry and clubbed him on the head with a hammer.
"I didn't know what to do," she said. "It's a local family beach. My dad's been surfing on that beach. He's been surfing on that beach for over 30/40 years."
In fact, Madeline says her mom and dad met at J.P. Luby when they were teens. Their family has grown up on that beach and she says it's disheartening to see that something like this could happen at a place where they've made so many memories.
"These aren't tears of sadness," tearful Bowen said, "they're tears of anger; to see that someone so cruel would want to do something to someone so kind."
Bowen said her dad identified the man who did this to him but said police didn't arrest him because they didn't actually see the assault. Doug ended up getting four stitches in his head and will be OK but Bowen says she doesn't see it ending here for whoever hurt her dad.
"I want him to get assault with a deadly weapon or get assaulted with a deadly weapon...honestly."
Corpus Christi Police haven't, yet, commented on the incident.
