HOUSTON (AP) - A man has been convicted in the 1994 shooting death of his 17-year-old girlfriend at his parents' home in Harris County.
A jury sentenced 38-year-old Christopher Stoernell to 60 years in prison for killing Ruth Majewski. Stoernell was living in Michigan last August when he was charged with murder and turned himself in.
The cold case unit of the Harris County Sheriff's Office reopened the case two years ago, analyzing the evidence again and interviewing original witnesses as well as new ones.
Witnesses at the time of the shooting testified Stoernell was acting recklessly with the .22 caliber pistol before he and Majewski went into a bedroom and a gunshot was heard.
Stoernell told investigators at the time that Majewski killed herself.
