CORPUS CHRISTI - A man who reportedly had some mental issues was shot and killed by police after a standoff at his home last night.
The Police Department says 56-year-old Daniel Scott called 911 saying he was armed with a weapon and had barricaded himself inside his house. He also said he felt threatened by his neighbors.
After several hours of trying to communicate with Scott, police moved in on his house. That's when Scott fired at them, and they fired back, and killed him.
Police say they knew Scott was suffering from a mental illness and only moved in when they felt they had to.
Scott's neighbors say their interactions with him were strange.
Gayle Hamm has lived next to him for almost a year and says he always seemed anxious.
"He had called the police once because he said that the neighborhood children had come down his chimney and stolen his fruit loops. And he didn't have a chimney," Hamm says.
Dr. Troy Martinez, a forensic psychologist with Texas A&M University Corpus Christi, says the added element of mental illness made the police officers' job extremely difficult.
"There is an unpredictable aspect to those with active mental illness, particularly the psychotic individual," Martinez says.
We tried to ask police more questions about the shooting, like why they didn't wait longer to move in on Scott's house if they knew he had a mental illness, but they didn't answer any questions after their press conference.
Police say the two officers who shot Scott have been placed on restrictive duty.
