AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst is taking his former campaign manager to court, filing a lawsuit that alleges he skimmed more than $2 million from Dewhurst's campaign funds over five years.
The Republican filed the lawsuit in state district court in Austin against Kenneth Barfield, who had managed Dewhurst campaigns for more than a decade.
The lawsuit says Barfield began diverting Dewhurst campaign funds sometime before 2010 by collecting on false invoices from his consulting company. According to the lawsuit, the activity went undetected for years because of the volume of activity and expenditures made during statewide campaigns.
The Austin American-Statesman reports damages sought aren't specified. State and federal authorities are investigating.
No telephone number for Barfield is found.
Dewhurst lost the 2012 Republican U.S. Senate nomination to Ted Cruz.
