CORPUS CHRISTI - A Corpus Christi native will make a national debut this month when she is honored for her contributions to the community.
Brenda Crawley will appear on the Oprah's Favorite Things show November 18th.
Crawley serves as PTA president at her children's school, Garcia Elementary. But, that's not all that keeps her busy. She works daily at Mrs. Baird's Bread Outlet, comes home around 6pm, and fits even more work in. "I'm also the co-leader for the Girl Scouts, I'm the leader for the Cub Scouts," she said, listing some of her many activities.
She also works at the Salvation Army and has done work for United Way.
Aside from that and spending time with 9-year-old Henry and 7-year-old Hannah, Crawley says she does what she can to give back.
"I would donate my platelets every week to the American Red Cross," Crawley said, "it's just little things I can do to help out. That's what I wanted to do."
Because of all she does, her husband nominated her for Military Spouse of the Year, a military recognition program for spouses.
It's that list that Oprah Winfrey's producers got a hold of. They invited all 30 of the people nominated for the special show.
They flew Crawley to a special screening of the show Married to the Military Alaska, or so she thought.
In the middle of that screening, Crawley got the surprise of her life.
"All of the sudden, the doors open up and the curtains fly down and it becomes an Oprah Favorites Show," said Crawley.
She is one of 30 military spouses Oprah honored for volunteering.
She describes the experience with just one word: amazing. "It's truly inspiring. Makes me want to do more and help more," said Crawley. She can't tell us all the details, but she did walk away with a hefty prize and an emotional experience.
"One of the spouses got to talk to her husband overseas on Skype. I mean, everyone was crying," Crawley said.
Not to mention, much appreciation for her husband of 9 years. "He made this happen, he nominated me," she said. "It made me feel special, wanted, and know that I do it for my family.
Crawley also volunteers for Toys for Tots, at church, and for other Navy organizations.
She would like to one day organize a group for local military spouses to get involved in the community.

On that same day, military spouses can nominate their husband or wife for the Military Spouse of the Year honor.
