Local Victim of Debit Card Fraud says There's a Pattern

CORPUS CHRISTI - A local man was the victim of debit card fraud, and it looks like what happened to him might be part of a pattern.
Mickey Takatch noticed an unusual charge on his debit card a couple of weeks ago, a charge he didn't make.
Someone got a hold of his debit card number and spent over $300 at a Macy's in McAllen.
Takatch banks at Navy Army Community Credit Union and says he's not the only customer who's had this problem.
"I made a Facebook post about it, because I was frustrated. And within 10 minutes, two or three of my friends contacted me saying the same thing happened to them. They have the same bank. It happened in the same city at the same stores," Takatch says.
He also says it happened around the same time.
Navy Army wouldn't talk to us on camera, but they did release this statement.
"Navy Army's systems have not been compromised. We take all necessary measures to protect our members' accounts and identity. In most cases, the fraud is a result of a merchant data breach."
A merchant data breach is when sensitive information on debit or credit cards gets leaked from a business. For instance, a restaurant or store.
Around the same time that the fraud occurred, Mastercard contacted Navy Army about a merchant data breach in Corpus Christi. They would not say which business was involved.
It means that information on debit cards used at that location could have gotten out.
But for now, all Takatch can do is wait for answers.
Navy Army reimbursed his money and they are working with police to investigate the situation.
