Local Program Aimed at Preparing Pregnant Women for Parenthood

CORPUS CHRISTI - Calling all expectant mothers! A local program goes beyond the special parking space at the grocery store. The "Cadena de Madres" program or "Network of Mothers" works to provide pregnant women with information about planning for parenthood.

If someone is expecting a visit from the stork sometime soon, like many women in the coastal bend, they may want to attend the "Cadena de Madres" program. It's a free event for parents expecting a newborn.

"If you don't have a lot of money there are options out there for you to be able to deliver a healthy baby," one mom said.

Community Outreach Manager, Ruth Lipko says the Driscoll Health Plan hosts about 20 baby showers a month. It aims to teach women about prenatal steps that will help you have a healthy baby.

"The main objective of the program is to decrease the percentage of premature births in our community. If you know Driscoll, you know we care very much about the community and about our children," Lipko said.

Lipko says, more than 6,000 South Texas women attend each year. Plus, thanks to a recent 25-hundred dollar grant, the event is always full of interactive activities for those expecting.

Several topics are covered but a big draw for mommy's-to-be and parents like Gloria Saldana, is a balanced diet.

"Mainly, just like the nutrition classes, you know it's always good to know what to eat, what not to eat, what to stay away from," Saldana said.

Ultimately, the program is geared toward empowering pregnant women to have healthier babies. Lipko says, since the "Network of Mothers" program started in 2006, it has reduced preterm birth rates by 34 percent. Everyone involved, hopes the number of healthy babies born in the coastal bend continues to grow.
