CORPUS CHRISTI - A local pharmacy is pulling itself of out of tough times with a new, unique business model, selling guns in the same shop.
Nichols Pharmacy off Leopard in Annaville in now a pharmacy/gun shop. They've been doing it since the year began.
They even have a billboard off I-37 with their new slogan, "Guns and Drugs".
Their owner, Robert Nichols, says insurance companies are paying less and less for prescriptions these days. He says their seeing less and less reimbursement every time they fill a prescription.
"The insurance companies determine how much they want to pay you. They say you pay 'x' amount for the drug, when you really pay something else," he says.
He added that it's tough to compete with national chains like Walgreens and C.V.S.
"You look at most of the pharmacies that are doing well, they have something up front, groceries or nick-nacks, and I looked around and guns was something nobody else was going to have. So, I decided to do that," Nichols says.
He says afer 53 years of business, it was time for the pharmacy to change up it's gameplan. He added that Texas is the perfect place to do it, and that business has been much better.
"You have people come in everyday to look at the guns and they say, well, I might as well get my prescription while I'm here," Nichols says.
He's also adding a gun range to the property. He says it will be ready in about a month.
