Local Man To Build Sports Complex In Honor of His Late Wife

CORPUS CHRISTI -- It's been more than eight months since local physical therapist Scott Humpal lost his wife Gaby in a plane crash.

To help keep Gaby's memory alive, he's raising money for a sports training complex in her name.

On February 19th, 2012 Scott Humpal, his wife Gaby, their three children and pilot were aboard a plane when it went down in a snowstorm in Colorado.

Gaby and the pilot didn't survive.

Scott says his children seem to be handling the situation as well as can be expected.

But for him, the pain is so deep, it's hard to talk about.

He said, "Kids are really strong. You don't realize it but they are just a lot stronger than we are as adults."

He says raising money for the Gaby Humpal Sports Training Complex is helping him heal.

It will be built behind the London Independent School District...where Scott's kids go to school.

Students will use the 10-thousand square foot facility for weight-lifting and training.

Scott's already raised around $200,000 but would like to raise about $600,000 more.

He said his wife would have loved this idea.

Scott said, "Gabby was very athletic. She believed a lot in sports training and she would be proud of this project."

While his life has been difficult since the death of his wife, Scott says the people around him have been so supportive.

He's hoping they'll support him in this project as well.
