Local Man Promotes Pit Bull Rescue Organization

CORPUS CHRISTI -- Over on the southside of the city, there's a man known to some as Mr. Pit Bull.
Lynyrd Guerrero said, "And that's why I relate to these guys so much because we're judged on the outside, when people really need to be looking on the inside."
For the past four and a half years, Lynyrd has been rescuing Pit Bulls from the streets.
He says he's taken in between 30-40 dogs, and found them good homes.
Just this month, he went to the courthouse and registered as the first Pit Bull rescue organization in Corpus Christi.
A Robstown animal control officer says a Pit Bull rescue is needed in Nueces County.
Over the phone, Jason Garcia agreed Pit Bulls get a bad rep.
He says it's the breed with the most called about complaints.
But, Garcia says Chows or Rottweilers typically bite the most.
He says about 70% of the time officers are called out for an aggressive dog the caller claims the dog is a Pit Bull, but it turns out to be another breed.
Garcia did say, however, a Pit Bull like any dog can bite, but it's how they hold onto something they bite that has the potential to cause more damage.
But Lynyrd says if you care for the dog and exercise it, it'll do nothing more than love you back.
He said, "They're good lickers. They kiss you a lot. They're real big babies. They're just a big baby."
He believes that so much, he even allows his 11 month old son to play with his Pit Bull rescues and plans to pass on the organization to him when he grows up.
