CORPUS CHRISTI - A local man is among the people who were taken hostage at a BP gas facility in Algeria.

Mark Cobb, a 1977 Flour Bluff graduate, reportedly hid in an unused room of the BP facility during the attack, then escaped unharmed.

Cobb is the president of this facility that was taken over by Islamic militants Wednesday.

A family friend received a text message from Cobb today that simply read, "I'm alive."

Cobb's son and mother still live in Port Aransas.

An Al-Qaeda linked terrorist group that calls itself "The Masked Brigade" is claiming responsibility for the incident.

The militants are claiming the attack is revenge for France's intervention against rebels in Mali. They also claim at least 35 hostages died.

But Algeria says four captives -- two Britons and two Filipinos -- were killed.

There's no way to independently verify the toll in the remote location in the Sahara desert.
