CORPUS CHRISTI - If we don't see any major rain soon, city officials expect tighter water restrictions to kick in by late May. So a local car wash is doing it's part to help conserve water while in the drought.

Even while in a drought many people still want their car to look nice and clean. But to do that means using quite a bit of water. So one local car wash has found a way to keep their customers happy and help save some water.

"It's our job as stewards to be good stewards of whatever we have given to us," said Tommy Northcutt with Mr. Fancy Pants Car Wash.

Mr. Fancy Pants recycles their water two different ways. One way is by reusing what they call, reject water. This is the extra water from the spot free rinse. Instead of just throwing it down drain, they use what's left over to make the different chemical mixtures to clean your car and to do the preliminary rinsing.

The second way is by using reclaim water.

"That's coming out of the trench. We filter it, we settle it through tanks, and then we use it again," said Northcutt. But only to clean your undercarriage and to keep some cloths wet.

And by doing this they save quite a bit of water.

"It takes about 30 gallons to wash a car. And we're saving I'd say around 8 gallons or so per car," said Northcutt.

On average he says they wash about 100 to 200 cars daily. So that means Mr. Fancy Pants is conserving about 800 to 16 hundred gallons per day. Northcutt says this is a practice they will continue to do as a permanent conservation measure.

Right now our combined lake levels are at 38%. But if they get down to 30% stage three restrictions will kick in. That is when the city will assign certain days residents can water their yards based on their address.
