CORPUS CHRISTI-The Corpus Christ Chamber of Commerce and other business leaders and elected officials returned today, from what they call, a successful trip to Washington D.C.

The Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce leads an annual Coastal Bend to DC trip for members of our business community and local elected officials. Representatives from the cities, counties and leading industries go to Washington, D.C. with a unified voice to urge members of Congress, Administration and Pentagon officials to address the specific needs and concerns of Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend.

"When a large delegation of community leaders spends the time and financial resources to make a trip like this, it gets the attention of all of the government officials. The unified effort benefits the entire area and will create a favorable impression of our community." said Foster Edwards, President/CEO of the Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce. "Only the citizens of the Coastal Bend can explain the Coastal Bend's needs and attributes to Washington DC. No one else will tell our story, so it is incumbent upon us to do so."

The attendees met and discussed issues with Pentagon officials including Assistant Secretary to the Navy, Juan Garcia, members of Congress including Representative Blake Farenthold, who was instrumental in organizing the meeting; Representative Filemon Vela, Senator Ted Cruz, and Senator Cornyn's staff.

The delegation delivered good news about NAS Kingsville, NAS Corpus Christi, and the Corpus Christi Army Depot. Among the items discussed were the need for funding for the Harbor Bridge and other infrastructure needs due to the increased economic development in our area due to the success of Eagleford Shale oil and natural gas production and other Port related development. However, the over-riding concern voiced by government officials in Washington, D.C. was the devastating affect sequestration will have on the Coastal Bend, which was candidly discussed.
