If you have ever been out to lake Corpus Christi when the water levels were not an issue, your eyes may be in for a dramatic surprise.
Lonely boat ramps, signs, picnic tables, and lots of growing vegetation inundate the area around the lake.
The lake levels have dropped as much as 17 feet in some areas. this dramatic drop begs the question...how is this affecting fish populations?
John Findeisen with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, says surprisingly the fishing is still good because their environment is concentrated to a smaller area .
"People are able to come out here and harvest catfish. We had talked to some gentlemen the last couple of weeks who have been coming out here running some trot lines and rod and reel fishing and they have been catching a lot of blue catfish," said Findeisen
But as the lake levels continue to drop, so will the fish populations.
"What we'll see as the lake continues to go down is that these fish populations are gonna get smaller and smaller and that's just nature's way of controlling that population and keeping it at carrying capacity."
With grass and other vegetation now in place where water once sat, this could be good news for when water levels rise again.
"When we do get an increase or a rise in the water level, it will come in. These fish are gonna reproduce and we have just tons and tons of excellent habitat opportunity out here to increase the spawning success."
Though things may seem dismal now, hopefully we will get more rain to begin the slow process of filling the lake back to normal levels.
