KINGSVILLE - The Santa Gertrudis Academy Softball team told us months before the season started that this was going to be a special year. They were right - the Lady Lions are making school history with their first ever trip to the State Tournament.
"We've been playing a lot of ball together for a really long time," catcher Danielle Gonzalez said. "There is so much chemistry. The game just rolls so smoothly now because we've played together so often."
The ticket to Austin comes as no surprise, SGA has been ranked in Class 2A's top-5 all season long. They finished the season ranked 2nd in state with a 38-4 record, and the community has embraced the historical season.
"It's really cool. I'll go to the movies and people will come up to me and say ‘hey, congratulations on going to state' and all I can do is smile and say thank you," outfielder Miranda Gonzalez said.
"It's been amazing," Danielle Gonzalez said. "Walking around town, you have so many people that know you and we have so much support from our school and people that we never had support from before."
All the outside recognition is exciting for the Lady Lions, but they're not losing sight of the task at hand. They still have a job to finish.
"This week nothing changes," coach Thomas De Los Santos said. "We keep our same routine, we work like we have worked all year covering the same fundamentals."
The Lady Lions are led by lead-off hitter and pitcher, senior Carla Noel, who echoed Coach De Los Santos' statement when asked about playing in Austin.
"It's just another game that I'm going to be pitching, another game that I'm going to put all my heart into and just go all out." Noel said.
(2)Santa Gertrudis Academy will face (3)Hawley in the semifinals on Wednesday at 6pm at McCombs Field on the UT campus in Austin. If the Lady Lions pick up win number 39, they'll earn a trip to Thursday's 2A State Championship game.
