Kocher Nominated for Prestigious Award

CORPUS CHRISTI - Redshirt sophomore Jake Kocher of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball team has been selected as a nominee for the 2014 Allstate National Association of Basketball Coaches Good Works Team.

The award recognizes a select group of college basketball student-athletes who have made significant contributions to the greater good of their communities through volunteerism and civic service. A total of 118 players were nominated for the award, including 75 student-athletes from NCAA Division I.

"This is a great honor for Jake and we're very proud of him," head coach Willis Wilson said. "We always preach the importance of giving back to the community, and all our players have really embraced it. Jake has gone the extra mile in trying to help where he can - both in Corpus Christi and his hometown of Austin."

In February, a special voting panel will select the 10-member team, which will be comprised of five student-athletes from the NCAA® Division I level and five student-athletes from NCAA® Divisions II, III and the NAIA. Former Duke University student-athlete, two-time NCAA champion and seven-time NBA All-Star Grant Hill will headline the Allstate NABC Good Works Team® voting panel.

Members of the Allstate NABC Good Works Team® will be invited by Allstate, an official corporate partner of the NCAA®, to the 2014 NABC Convention and 2014 NCAA® Men's Final Four® in Dallas, where they will participate in a community project in the city. Allstate is an official corporate partner of the NABC and NCAA.

Kocher is in his third year with the Islanders program, but just his second year on the court, as he missed all of the 2012-13 season with a hip injury. So far in 2013-14, the Austin native is averaging 4.9 points per game and is second on the team with 14 steals on the season. He is shooting .447 from the field.

Since 2008, Allstate has partnered with the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) as sponsor of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, which shines a spotlight on the positive, off-the-field impact college football student-athletes have on their communities. Through an arrangement with the AFCA and NABC, Allstate is able to expand the Good Works Team® to also recognize college basketball student-athletes at all levels who donate their time and effort to make a difference off the court.
