CORPUS CHRISTI - An adventurous bunch of professional kite boarders jumped off the USS Lexington Tuesday morning. The international group North Kiteboarding ventured to the Coastal Bend as part of the promotional video they were shooting.
Among those who made the jump was Mario Rodwald. He one of the top three kite boarders in the world. Rodwald has been boarding for more than 10 years but says he's never started a ride quite like this.
"This is the first time we jump off a big thing like this so yeah we're all pretty nervous," Rodwald said.
All of the kite boarders are from a North Kiteboarding out of Germany. They made a stop in Corpus Christi to get a change of scenery. Members say they're a little skeptical about the jump.
"I think it's like 60 feet high so if you jump and fall on your board you could break some bones probably."
Rodwald says the idea came from two pros who made this same jump back in 2004. He says it's an experience that's far from ordinary.
"Yeah normally we are on the water and we can jump but we never jump from anything that high," Rodwald said.
All four kite surfers jumped off the end of the flight deck off the Lexington, a 60 foot drop to the water. Rodwald mentioned being a bit nervous before taking the plunge.
"I'm pretty nervous because he just came back and said it's a bit sketchy but he's here so I think we can make it," he added.
He landed somewhat smoothly considering the windy weather conditions.
Meanwhile, Lexington crews say the group reached out to them about doing the jumps last Friday and 4 short days later they arrived, after signing a lengthy waiver.
The group's next stop will be in Florida Keys.
