CORPUS CHRISTI - Jury selection is underway today in the trial of a former Alice police officer accused of killing his wife in December 2011. Jose Gonzales III was arrested at his home in Alice following a brief standoff in which he released his son before surrendering.

Authorities say Gonzales burst into the family home of Leslie Morin and shot her as she was hiding in a closet. He allegedly took his son from the home in Annaville and drove to Alice.

Gonzales was fired from the police department after his arrest.

Prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty in this case. If convicted of capital murder he would receive an automatic life sentence.
