CORPUS CHRISTI - Junior guard John Jordan of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball team has been named First Team All-Southland Conference, the league announced today. It is the first all-conference honor for Jordan, and the first time an Islanders player has been named to the first team since Kevin Palmer in 2010.
Jordan was joined on the first team by Stephen F. Austin junior Jacob Parker - the league's player of the year - as well as Northwestern State sophomore Jalen West, Oral Roberts senior Shawn Glover and Central Arkansas senior LaQuentin Miles. SFA's Brad Underwood was named coach of the year, West garnered defensive player of the year laurels, NW State's Zeek Woodley was named freshman of the year, and Sam Houston State's Jabari Peters gathered newcomer of the year recognition.
The league's end of the year awards are determined by a vote of the league's head coaches and sports information directors.
Jordan is in the midst of one of the finest seasons in Islanders history, averaging 14.9 points (10th in the league) to go along with his 5.2 assists and 4.6 rebounds. He is also in the league's top 10 in steals (1.6, 4th), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.9, 5th) and minutes (33.9, 4th).
The Houston native is on pace to break his own school records for minutes played (1,015) and assists (157) during the postseason. His 448 points this season are seventh in Islanders lore, while he is second in free throws made (177) and attempted (258), and is ninth in steals (49). Jordan has posted at least 20 points on 10 occasions to go along with 17 games with at least five assists and 15 games with at least five rebounds.
Even though he is only a junior, he is already ascending the career record books as well. He needs just 40 more assists in his career to break Brian Evans' (2000-04) school record of 493, as Jordan has tallied the top three assist seasons in school history in his three years. Earlier this year, he also became the ninth member of the Islanders' 1,000-point club, and needs 393 points to become the school's all-time scoring leader. He is also in the school's all-time top 10 in minutes (4th, 3,018), free throws made (363, 3rd), free throws attempted (531, T-1st), rebounds (377, 9th) and steals (119, 7th).
Perhaps more importantly, Jordan has led the Islanders to their finest season since the 2006-07 squad won the regular-season and tournament titles to garner the only NCAA Tournament berth in school history. This year's Islanders have clinched a winning season at 17-14 overall, and their 14-4 mark placed them second in the conference behind only undefeated SFA. By virtue of the second-place finish, A&M-Corpus Christi received a bye all the way to the semifinals of the 2014 Southland Conference Basketball Tournament, where they will play on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas. The game will be televised on ESPN3.
