The Houston native had three double-doubles, matching the school record with 11 assists in a double-double at Lamar, and adding double-doubles with rebounds and points against Southeastern Louisana and Sam Houston State. He had a career-high 24 points at Southeastern. He also set a school record with his 1,060 minutes played on the season.
Nelson had a solid debut campaign with the Islanders, leading the team with his 13.8 points per game and 7.8 rebounds. He finished 12th in the league in points and 7th in the Southland in rebounds. In conference play, those numbers elevated to 14.5 points and 8.0 rebounds, ranking 11th and sixth in the league, respectively.
The Port Allen, La., native had five double-doubles on the season and finished with double-digit rebounds six times in conference action. His career high of 28 points came against Houston on Nov. 25. He was named Southland Player of the Week on March 4, after posting back-to-back 23 point efforts in a pair of Islanders wins over Southeastern Lousiana and Nicholls.
Regular-season champion Stephen F. Austin was the big winner in the individual awards with senior Taylor Smith taking home Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors. Head Coach Danny Kaspar was also named the league's Coach of the Year. Second-place Northwestern State took home the other two individual awards, with DeQuan Hicks earning Newcomer of the Year honors and Jalan West garnering the Freshman of the Year award.
