KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M Kingsville football team continued its steady climb up the rankings Monday as the Javelinas were 14th in the Week 2 AFCA Coaches Poll.
The Javelinas, who were unranked entering the regular season, climbed 10 spots in the second poll of the regular season after downing then-No. 9 Abilene Christian 16-13 in Abilene, Kingsville entered the game as the No. 24 team in the nation.
With the climb to No. 14, the Javelinas are now the highest-ranked team in the Lone Star Conference. Midwestern State was fourth heading into the weekend but was one of three top 5 teams to lose. The Mustangs fell 12 spots to No. 16 after being upset by Tarleton State, while ACU fell to No. 20.
West Texas A&M (1-1), this week's opponent at the Lone Star Football Festival, is receiving votes.
With the victory over ACU, TAMUK has won over 75% of its games as a ranked team (162-54). The Javs improved to 14-21 versus ranked when away from Javelina Stadium.
