KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team rebounded from a 6-1 loss in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader with West Texas A&M to win the second game 6-4 at Nolan Ryan Field.
Kingsville moved to 27-13 with the split and stands 10-9 in the Lone Star Conference. The Buffaloes are 23-16 and 9-10 in the LSC.
After falling behind in game two, 2-0, the Javelinas erupted for six runs in the bottom of the third inning. Kingsville sent 11 hitters to the plate pounding out eight hits in the inning. The Hoggies had four doubles including a two-run double by Ben Villafuerte to knot the game at two.
The Javelinas took the lead a batter later on a two-run home run by Taylor Taska, which is his sixth of the season. Chris Ballou followed with a double and later scored on a passed ball. Matt Perez drove in the final run of the inning with a single to right.
The score would remain 6-2 until West Texas struck for two in the top of the sixth. Jarvis Smith drove in Justin Henderson with a double to right-center field. David Hebert made it a two-run game scoring Smith on a single through the left side.
Facing Javelina closer Jeremy Flores in the seventh, West Texas received a lead-off double from Tyler McKnight. He was thrown at second as Ramirez lined into a 4-6 double play ending the threat. Flores induced a fly ball to right to end the game for his eighth save of the year.
Zachary Pettiford earned the win to move to 4-3 on the season. He lasted six innings allowing four runs on nine hits striking out six.
The Buffs jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a run in second on a Hebert's single. Henderson drove in the game's second run with an RBI single in the third.
In the first game of the day, West Texas scored five in the first and one in the second off Taska (5-2). Of the six runs just one run was earned as Kingsville had two costly errors in the opening game.
Hebert had a two-single to cap the first inning.
Taska had two hits for the Javelinas as they had just four in the game. He scored the Javelinas lone run of the game off Joshua Weyker in the fourth inning. Weyker moved to 3-4 on the season as he limited the Javelinas to the one run on four hits.
The Javelinas will look to win the series when it concludes Sunday at 1 p.m. with the team holding Senior Day recognizing seniors - Barker, Pettiford, Ballou, James Wallace, Joe Tallerine, Villafuerte, Jeremy Flores and Trent Wagner.
