KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team was able to rally from behind in the opening game winning 7-4 over Eastern New Mexico, but a ninth inning rally in game two came up just short in a 6-4 loss.
With the loss, the Javelinas are now 29-14 overall and 20-9 in Lone Star Conference play. Eastern New Mexico is 22-21 on the year and 11-18 in the league. With two LSC series left in the season, the Hoggies are in first place by a game over West Texas A&M.
The Javelinas rallied from 4-2 down in the opener with five runs in the fifth. With one away, Taylor Taska and Ryan Guedry reached on back-to-back singles. Taska scored the first run on hit by James Black.
After Clint Wallace reached on an infield single to load the bases, Justin Lee tied the game with a bases loaded walk. Dustin Aguilar put down a bunt single that Matt Artalejo fielded and threw away down the right field line. Lee, Wallace and Aguilar all scored on the play.
Down 1-0 after the top of the first, Kingsville took the lead with two runs in the top of the third. Walls led the inning off with a double and stole third. After Taska walked, Walls scored as Guedry reached on an error. Taska raced home on a double by Brian Frazier, while Guedry was thrown out trying to score.
The Greyhounds scored three runs on five hits in the fourth to regain the lead and held it until the sixth when the Javelinas rallied.
Cody Williams earned the win in relief of Taska, who permitted four runs on nine hits in 3-1/3 innings. Williams moved to 5-5 as he tossed 2-2/3 innings of scoreless baseball. He had four strikeouts, walked one and allowed one hit. Ryan Scott earned his eighth save with a scoreless inning of work.
Artalejo suffered the loss as he allowed all seven runs on nine hits. Five of the runs were earned as he fell to 6-4.
Wallace had two of Kingsville's nine hits. Matthew Burks had four hits for Eastern.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Eastern jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first off starter Denver Diefenbach. They extended their lead to 6-2 before the Javelinas threatened in the ninth.
Burks was hit by a pitch from Diefenbach to start the game and moved to second as Brett Ackerman reached on an error. After Blake Cooper drove in Burks, Colton Sims doubled to left to score Ackerman and Cooper.
Diefenbach, who entered the weekend with conference-best eight wins, pitched two innings allowing all six runs with five earned. He gave up five hits.
Matt Rhodes came out of the bullpen and pitched seven scoreless innings to give the Hoggie offense a chance. He scattered three hits and walked one.
The Javelinas cut their deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the second as Brian Frazier led off the inning with a solo home run off ENMU starter Rusty Edwards, who lasted 2-1/3 innings. It was Frazier's third of the season.
After Julian Duran pulled Kingsville to within 6-2 with a sacrifice fly to center in the fifth, the Javelinas would not score again until the bottom of the ninth. With one away, Ryan Fickel was hit by a pitch, went to second as Aguilar walked and scored on a hit by Walls.
Miles Holcomb then came off the bench with a single to right loading the bases. Taska hit a sacrifice fly off Kyle Kesmarki to center to plate the second run of the inning. With the tying run at first, Guedry popped out to second for the final out of the game.
Jorge Quezada (1-1) claimed the win for Eastern tossing four innings of 2-hit baseball. He allowed one unearned run. Kesmarki earned his second save of the season.
Walls had three hits of Kingsville's seven hits in the finale to lead the Javelinas raising his average to .368. The Hoggies stranded nine. The Greyhounds had eight hits led by Sims with three.
The Javelinas step out of Lone Star play on Tuesday when they visit Austin for a crucial South Central Region matchup with St. Edwards at 2:30 p.m.
